Ibrahim Mogra on Forgiveness

Whenever we do any wrong to someone and thereafter offer an apology we hope and expect to be forgiven. But would we be as willing to forgive those who wrong us and just as readily? God, we know, is always ready to forgive in an instant. In the Qur’an, He addresses the Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), “(O, Muhammad), when the people who believe in Our signs come to you, say, “Peace be on you”, Your Lord has made mercy incumbent upon Himself. Indeed if any of you committed evil in ignorance, and thereafter repented and corrected (one’s conduct), then indeed He is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

Whenever someone does any wrong to us we expect them to apologise. But would we be just as prepared to offer an apology to those whom we wrong? If we were all prepared to apologise for our wrongs and be prepared to forgive those who wrong us we would all be happier.

There is no one who can claim that they have done no wrong either to fellow human beings or to God. It is therefore necessary for all of us to apologise and repent sincerely. Muhammad (pbuh) said that the one who repents from sins is like one who has no sins at all. It is also important for us to forgive all those who say sorry to us. Muhammad said, “The Merciful One shows mercy to those who are merciful. (Therefore) show mercy to those who are on the earth and the One in the heavens will show you mercy.”

Dear God, give us the courage to seek forgiveness from those whom we have wronged. Dear God give us the strength and ability to forgive those who have wronged against us, amin.
